Sustainability has been a fast growing trend amongst the fashion industry, but especially as of recently with the outburst of Covid-19. The swimwear industry has benefited from this trend by offering swimwear made from recycled fabrics.
From recent studies, the swimwear market is expected to grow by $6.72 billion during 2020-2024. The increase with being more self conscious amongst consumers has become a leading factor to the result in market growth. Another factor as to why this market is rapidly rising is due to the rises in temperatures due to climate change as a result of our treatment to the planet. The affect which the clothing industry has on our planet just as a result of excess amounts of waste and the disposal of these unwanted garments, is playing a great toll in this result. There has been a recorded rise in B&Bs, hotels and holiday park bookings, which is also a resulting factor in the rise in swimwear purchases.
As a result of increasing consumer interests in swimming and families vacating in countries near the beach, in islands and at resorts, the United States' swimwear market has remained the leading market in the world.
The global swimwear market is forecasted to reach a value of $28.7 billion by 2025, which is a steady rise from the recorded value in 2017 of $18.454 billion.
With a rise in the innovation of swimwear, constituting to different qualities such as, swimwear flexibility, UV protection, tan through swimwear, thermal insulation and reversible garments, the endless array of new ways in approaching consumers is rising. The trend constantly getting when new and popular in that point in time is resulting to be a contributing factor to these high forecasted market revenue for the swimwear industry.
This all being said, these new innovations has higher costs attached to it and therefore the prices for these swimwear garments are rising. The approach to appealing to consumers is through selling a product which justifies its prices and if a garment is more sustainable then that will reason enough for the rise in prices from swimwear that isn't ethically or sustainably made. With these higher prices, the demand for these luxury swimwear which is also a supporter of slow fashion as opposed to fast fashion since the quality of these swimwear are supposed to be on the higher end of the scale will mean that these items of clothing can be reused for many years to come.
A large number of sustainable brands such as Ama Thea The Label have taken new approaches in positioning themselves within the swimwear industry. With their transparency and ethical choices to produce all their garments in London where they're based, resulting in limiting their carbon footprint, this sustainable and ethical brand is one to watch out for. Their swimwear fabric is made from recycled ocean waste, their cover ups are made from 100% organic cotton and any off cuts that they do encounter, they use to create cute accessories such as scrunchies to limit their contribution to the clothing industries waste towards our planet. They also pride themselves in not only considering the construction of their garments and how they can make it sustainably but also the packaging, the wastage during the patterning making process and their made-to-order production approach.
The clothing industry is one of the largest polluters globally. It produces large amounts of pollution, carbon emissions and waste every year. There are a number of brands who have been caught to burn their waste or tossing unsold, unused garments into land fills as a result. There has even been reports of cruise ships discarding of their waste into the ocean and have received a large sum of fines in return. Every year, 8 million tons of plastic has been dumped into the ocean. Only 10% of all plastic is recycled. That means 90% of plastic is being discarded incorrectly and as a result harming our environments and planet. There are millions of marine animals suffer from this and their lives are at an all time high as a result of our lack of consideration and simple acts which we could take to better our planet.
Buying clothes from brands who consider their impact on the planet and how the production of their items will in turn effect us in the future is the more eco conscious thing to do. These sustainable brands don't part take in contributing to the already existing highs of waste but they use fabrics which is made from recycled waste which will then be able to be recycled later on in the products life span.
Luckily for us, the use of garments made from recycled fabrics is on the rise. With this trend, hopefully we can do better to assist our planet for the future.
